Living Green in Watkins Creek Watershed

About the Project

Living Green in the Watkins Creek Watershed is an exciting new environmental education initiative RegionWise is leading in partnership with the Hazelwood School District. The three-year, $666,000 effort is aimed at promoting the idea and practice of living green through educating students and property owners about the value of sustaining a clean water system and what individuals, neighborhoods, and communities can do to reduce the damage to our rivers and streams caused by urban living. Living Green…incorporates outdoor classrooms designed to blend seamlessly with the landscapes of the Hazelwood School’s four middle new schools. These unique classrooms offer hands-on learning about natural water systems and ecology. Native plants will adorn the landscape features called Rain Gardens that help to maintain healthy water by filtering and slowing down rainwater run-off. Through this project, students and other residents will learn how to create Rain Gardens in any backyard.

The project is partially funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region VII, through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act
